“I give you a new commandment, that you love one another. Just as I have loved you, you also should love one another.”
—John 13:34 (NRSV)
Just this afternoon, our son, Jon, called to talk to us about the upcoming holiday. As we reflected together on this Thanksgiving, he placed love right alongside gratitude.
When we love unconditionally, a sense of great thankfulness is naturally part of the mix. What a security and comfort is found in that beautiful kind of love!
After talking with Jon, I began thinking about how love intertwines with the Thanksgiving season—this special month of gratitude. Only God's Son offers the kind of love that is all encompassing. We love Him because He first loved us. And for that, we are deeply grateful. Gratitude is such an energizing emotion! It emanates from our very being as the Light of God's compassion and great care flows through our lives to those we touch.
A blessed Thanksgiving Season!
“Your arm is endowed with power; your hand is strong, your right hand exalted.
Righteousness and justice are the foundation of your throne; love and faithfulness go before you.
Blessed are those who have learned to acclaim you, who walk in the light of your presence, LORD.”
—Psalm 89:13-15 (NIV)
On my recent book tour through the Midwest, I had the opportunity to meet many delightful people. Many of you shared with me stories of God's great faithfulness in your lives. God's hand is indeed strong!
Just think how great, majestic, and amazing is our heavenly Father! His might and creativity are far beyond our human ability to fathom. Yet His sovereignty over all things, and over our very lives, demonstrates His great love for all of humankind.
Our heavenly Father made you incredibly special and unique—and oh, so important to Him. He offers you what it takes to live a life of glorious spiritual strength. There's no way to do it without Him! The depth of His amazing love fills me with awe, and I want to embrace the Light and Truth of God's presence and His ways. What a gift it is to be able to do so together!
“I can do everything through Christ who strengthens me.”
—Philippians 4:13 (God's Word Translation)
When I was a girl, I was very shy. I wrote many stories and poems and hid them in the bottom drawer of my dresser—concealing them from view. The Lord, my mother, and one young cousin were the only ones who knew about my passion for writing.
While in high school, I often trembled with fright before giving a required speech, terrified of my own voice, not realizing then that I would become a schoolteacher and, eventually, a published writer of many books, requiring me to speak at conferences, libraries, and in churches. Thankfully, the verse in Philippians was one I could cling to, and, believe me, I did!
But through my life, no matter what circumstance I faced, I learned to count on this powerful verse—the comforting and enabling truth that God's spirit resides in His children. We can trust our heavenly Father to be our ongoing courage and strength ... whether we are just beginning our Christian walk or have been holding tightly to God's hand for many years.
